Le Creuset was born in 1925 in northern France, where cast iron craftsmanship met a bold new idea: bringing colour into the heart of the kitchen. From the first enameled cocotte, the goal was simple: combine material expertise with expressive design. That philosophy continues to guide every piece we create today. What began in a small foundry has grown into a global cookware brand shaped by colour and craft.
Born from a Foundry Tradition
Our origins lie in the ‘cruset’ or ‘crucible,’ the melting pot into which molten iron is poured. It was here that founders Armand Desaegher and Octave Aubecq pioneered the first enameled cast iron casserole in the original shade, Volcanic. More than a century later, that same founding process continues to inform how our cast iron is made today in Fresnoy-le-Grand.
